April Insects – Scarab Beetle
Made from recycled and oxided copper and sterling silver, this Scarab Beetle Brooch is intricately handmade.
Each design starts out from a sketched drawing. It is then uploaded to my computer and my cnc machine cuts out the silhouettes of all three layers. I then add more texture to each piece before doming the round shells. The heart layer and domed shells are then soldered to the body giving the scarab beetle its distinct look.
Each edge is then filed smooth. All surfaces are then gently sanded to remove any scratches and polished using various grades to reveal a shiny matt finish. The brooch is then cleaned and dipped in the oxide before being polished back to reveal the end finish. The brooch pin or magnetics are then secured to the back and the piece is given a final hand polishing before its ready for its new owner.
This brooch measures approximately 65mm tall, 60mm wide, 15mm deep and is very light weight.
This brooch come with a blackened oxide / patina finish.
The oxide / patina is a surface treatment that will wear away over time, revealing the metal below. This is exacerbated if cleaned too much, so I recommend only cleaning when necessary. Should you wish to have it re-oxided after the patina has worn away, just contact me and I can arrange this service.
This brooch is available with a traditional barrel pin clasp or industrial strength magnets (1kg pulling power per magnet) eliminating holes in your clothing.
