Australiana - Wombat Brooch
This brooch is handmade in my studio and features industrial magnets which are super strong. Your clothes will never have holes ever again (up to 1kg pulling power per magnet).
The versatility of the magnets makes this brooch an awesome scarf pin, shoe decoration, hat pin, jacket pin, or hair accessory. So get creative!!
Not a fan of magnets, no problem, choose the Traditional Barrel Clasp Pin option instead.
Made from recycled Copper, this Wombat brooch will add a playful element to any outfit.
Each design starts from a sketched drawing. It is then transferred to the metal using a template I've traced around and the dot texture is hammered into the metal. Each piece is then precisely hand cut using my hand saw and a super fine saw blade.
The edges are then filed smooth, all surfaces are sanded to remove any scratches, and polished to the final finish. If the pieces are to be oxidised (have a blackened finish), I would give each piece a clean using soapy water, submerge them in hot water, and then into a hot patina solution and watch for the chemical blackening reaction to take effect.
The pieces are then rinsed in a bicarbonate soda/water solution and then cold water ensuring the patina solution has been neutralised and removed from the metal. Each piece is then hand sanded with a fine emery paper to remove any excess patina on the surface. The metal on the back of the brooch is then wiped clean using metho and the industrial magnet or traditional barrel clasp is added to complete the design.
This brooch measures approximately 65mm tall and 60mm wide and is very lightweight.
Each brooch is available in a natural finish OR with a blackened oxide/patina finish.
The Oxide / Patina is a surface treatment that will wear away over time, revealing the metal below. This is exacerbated if cleaned too much, so I recommend only cleaning when necessary. Should you wish to have them re-oxidised after the patina has worn away, just contact me and I can arrange this service.
If you would like to keep its bright natural finish you will need to regularly clean the brooch using Brasso (see cleaning tips for more information).
PLEASE NOTE: If you have a pacemaker then this brooch is NOT suitable for you as it could interfere with the machine's performance. The brooch can also be a choking hazard for small children so please take care!
